Unfortunately, I am not able to reproduce the issue. I forgot to mention that when changing the resolution with the gnome tool, a projector was connected to my vga-out. I cannot retry that at the moment, since I have no projector available. My customized xorg.conf and the output of lspci -vvnn is attached.
