you are right; not sure what I had done, but I just removed the radeonhd driver and it still works. I'm not sure what I did to fix it, either. I am changing the description. Besides installing radeonhd, all I did was work with the Display Settings tool and log in and out several times. For whatever reason, the proper resolution wasn't offered at first.
