But when translating, no information are given to the translator like "should be shorter than 90 chars because the design doesn't allow to split the string automaticly into multiple line". Currently, the string must be published in an image that has landed on your nexus to see that it is finally cutted with "...". For this part, I have 2 idea to suggest: 1. Add a description filed for translator, that include the max size 2. Add a rule for translators like they must check on the emulator with the translated string if it fits well (but changing the process like that requiere translators to spend more time/skill/etc, so it's not an easy decision to take) The 1. should be the simpliest. This is mainly about the part "Download more apps from the store". About other part like "Select All / Paste" of the clipboard, the space is too short I think (size for each action looks hardcoded, not expandable) for at least french translation. I have check others mobile OS, a lot of design are provided : sometime it's icon only like firefox, sometime its selectbox like old android, sometime it word only like old IOS In no one of these OS I could see in english or french a word that can finnish itself in the area of the other. I think this case it looks to me more a design issu than translation. (If this is true, it should not be marked as opinion; do you suggest me I open a bug for every example I found, or we get on with it?) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Translations Coordinators, which is subscribed to Ubuntu Translations. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu Translations bug mail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1363126 Title: On ubuntu touch (unity8) some space are perfect for english, not for translated strings Status in Ubuntu Translations: New Status in The Unity 8 shell: Opinion Bug description: Hi, I am using ubuntu/unity8 on a phone, and I have some issue since strings are more and more translated in my language (FR - french). The bug appear on some apps when some string doesnt' size the place it was for the original english string. This is a problem when the translated string is longer than the original. -- TL;DR: Some area in the unity8 design are well designed for small word. Not for long word. And after translation this become more visible. -- Some example of related project: -"unity8 dash" ( it is the display name that is shown when the dash reboot itself after a crash, not sure about its codename): * when you scroll down, you will see a software center orange icon with a sentence at its top to explain you can get more app it is not possible to read it all in english, it is cutted by the right edge. - some bottom panel (swipe from bottom to upper) has often this issue * Some third party app got translation (or even original string) into the bottom panel too long. I don't know if this will keep into the next version of the ubuntu SDK but I have a possible core app issue with the current version * Files manager : At this moment, the word "View" is traducted by "Vue" in french, but it might be changed by its usual word (nautilus, nemo, explorer.exe, firefox, most app...) have the word "Affichage". There are plenty of language, Might be already like that with one of them. -Selection/copy/paste (as seen on the messaging app with the keyboard): * when you write a message (sms) to someone, if you make a long tap you have a popup that come up (select all/paste, not the copy/cut/paste. In french, the word "Select All" is traducted by "Tout sélectionner". As you can see, the translated string is longer, and it goes upside the word close to it "Coller" (Paste). -- Ubuntu touch for phone on Nexus 4 Using image #203 on devel chanel for mako 20140821.1 asop_mako-userdebug 4.4.2 KOT49H 20140806-1958-0ubuntu2 test-keys To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/1363126/+subscriptions _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-translations-coordinators Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-translations-coordinators More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
