I also encountered this problem after substituting
dpkg_1.14.20ubuntu5_i386.deb from the alpha-4 image for
dpkg_1.14.20ubuntu4_i386.deb in the 20080903.1 image and netinstalling
again. So, it might be possible that the problem is not with dpkg but
rather with some other package which might be misconfigured. I'm
attaching the new syslog in case this might be useful information.
