I take it back... it's still not working. It seems to work sometimes but mostly not. I tried adding options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, as suggested by https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto , but this doesn't fix it. (Also, on boot, it appears to make the 2.6.27 kernel hang.)
