I know bug reports are not discussion forums, but let me just say that this approach runs counter to Mark Shuttleworth's stated goal of having Ubuntu look better than the Mac. I also use OS X and this is the kind of aesthetic compromise Apple would never make. So this is something I would have devoted Canonical resources to (usplash is part of main after all). (Unfortunately I am not a developer but a mere user of Ubuntu, otherwise I would try to work on this.)
