I've just dowloaded and installed the package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/i386/linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic/download After a reboot on the new kernel (with acpi=off as usual), I tried a "cat /dev/scd0 > /dev/null" from a commercial DVD9 and got the same system freeze as before.
