This is fixed in virtualbox-ose 1.6.2 (which is available in Intrepid).
I've verified it by:
1. sudo invoke-rc.d vboxdrv stop
2. Start virtualbox-ose, get the error when trying to start a VM
3. sudo invoke-rc.d vboxdrv start
4. Clicked "Start" again, which worked
