Hi, Here on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel GMA X4500MHD), I encountered the same problem : * Intrepid Alpha 4 worked out of the box (X.org OK from Live CD, install ok, reboot ok) * Then I dist-upgraded, and rebooted * And then black screen (but backlight is on) ; X seems running and gnome too, because CAPS lock gets on/off correctly. * I rebooted with Ctrl-Alt-F1 Ctrl-Alt-Suppr, removed splash from the kernel entry, * then I encountered #189621, * but X came back normal. * i definitely removed "splash" from /boot/grub/menu.lst, ran "sudo update-grub" and "sudo apt-get install v86d" and now I've got my X and GNOME (note that without v86d, X is ok too ; #189621 seems harmless).
