Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

System: Ubuntu 8.04, standard install/ all updates

The HOSTNAME environment variable is not made available to user apps.

If I try to run this code,

getenv("HOSTNAME");

it fails. Also, if I do "env | grep HOSTNAME" I get no results. The
above code works on other distros, why not ubuntu?

I went into my /etc/bash.bashrc and added "export HOSTNAME" and that
seemed to fix it.

Is this a bug, or is ubuntu designed this way?

** Affects: bash (Ubuntu)
