You probably won't believe this.

In working up a test file just now, I discovered that the problem now
does not occur with "emacs -q". I believe I tested this before
submitting the bug yesterday and "emacs -q" also had the problem. Now it
doesn't. (I rebooted my machine this afternoon.)

So, now the problem is limited to my .emacs file. This simple file
system action made the problem go away:

$ mv .emacs dot-emacs; cp dot-emacs .emacs

And this action made the problem return:

$ mv dot-emacs .emacs

So, for now, I can make the problem go away. And, clearly, it's not
going to be possible for you to discover what's wrong from this
information. So, for now, please close the bug. -- al
