Actually, they're in about the same spot.  One is a floor below the AP and the 
other is a floor above.  The one I'm having trouble with is below and actually 
indicates a higher signal strength, which is probably right.
I think the other APs around all use 6 or maybe 9, and I'm on 11.  Furthermore, 
this one's in the basement, where you can't detect any AP except the one above 
it.  Same with my 4312 laptop down here.  The one upstairs should really be the 
one suffering from outside interference.
I just did a fresh install, no modifications.  I installed b43-fwcutter from 
deb, cut the firmware for b43 and b43legacy (is that hardware dependent or can 
I swap those files between computers?) to /lib/firmware, copied in the modified 
sprom.  I restarted and tried to connect with network manager.  Still the 
authenticate timeouts.  I tried manual settings and it did the same thing.
