I can confirm that photos with spaces in the filename are now imported
correctly.  However, if the filename contains other punctuation
characters the problem is identical to the above.  With my photo
collection it was at least the following characters: & , ( )

Attached is a perl script that I used to fix my collection.  To run:

sudo apt-get install perl-modules sqlite3
cd ~/.gnome2/f-spot
cp photos.db photos.db.backup
perl path_to/fix-photos.pl
