Public bug reported:

I cannot  boot into 2.6.26-5 generic in up to date intrepid alpha4.  The
boot ends with a brief flash of text referring to "vbe module" (or
something similar) and goes into kernel panic. The recovery kernel boots
successfully.

This is a regression associated with a recent kernel update and has been
confirmed by others in the ubuntu forum:
