Thank you for your response, Pedro.  Yes, this happens with all image
files on my computer.

I tried creating a backtrace using the instructions in the wiki, though
I ran into problems.  Using the "already running" instructions wouldn't
work, because the problem had already occured by the time I launched
gdb.   I tried using the "before running" instructions, but could not
figure out how to get gdb to treat the path to the image file (gdb eog
</path/to/picture>) as an option to eog, and not an option to gdb.

I then moved on to try another user account as you had suggested.  The
program worked as expected--NO PROBLEMS.  What's strange, is that after
running eog on another user account, I could no generate the problem on
my account.  I guess I'm glad it is no longer causing a problem, but it
really doesn't help if there indeed is an actual bug.  Sorry.  I will
submit additional comments if the problem continues.

Enough of my rambling!  Thank you for your prompt help--I'm new to this
debugging thing and appreciate the opportunity to learn something new!
