Your bug really sound like my bug 258486 which can be reproduced when nvidia restricted drivers are installed inside the LiveCD session before ubuntu is installed to the computer. In these conditions, X fall in failsafe mode. In my case, re-installing all nvidia-* package in synaptic fixes the problem.
