Jean-Baptiste, Thanks for responding. Unfortunately I no longer have Hardy on the partition in question as I have started alpha testing Intrepid Ibex (which up till now does not suffer from this problem).
Even without setting ACPI to off, switching off at the wall for 5 seconds would cause this problem not to happen. It only happens if mains power is kept on between switching off and back on again. However, if you have other ideas I could probably put the partition back to Hardy to test. Might take me a little while to do so, so please be patient with me.
