Hi Bernhard, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for your bug report! You
mentioned you are using metacity; have you explicitly enabled
compositing in it? If not, I don't think AWN will run properly and
strange behavior is expected. Please run:
gconftool-2 -g '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager'
from a terminal and provide the output. Thanks!
