So I just tried downgrading to e2fsprogs 1.40.8-2ubuntu2 (and all of
its associated libraries), and I can't reproduce the crash. What I
get is:

# /sbin/e2fsck /tmp/qnap-sdc3.img
e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)
/tmp/qnap-sdc3.img has unsupported feature(s): extents
e2fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck!

That appears to be what you have installed on your system, according
to the dependencies.txt attachment. Can you reproduce the core dump
if you run "/sbin/e2fsck /tmp/qnap-sdc3.img" on your system?
