I had this problem too. When I would launch amsn with "padsp amsn" it would cause my CPU to jump to 100% and hover there until I quit the application. The solution I found is to use the "-M" option with the command:
padsp -M amsn According to http://linux.die.net/man/1/padsp this option will "Disable /dev/mixer emulation. " It solves the CPU usage problem, but since I don't know what functionality /dev/mixer provides, I don't know if this causes any new issues.
