I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and the version shipped with it, Gaim 2.0.0beta3.1. I usually never set the status manually, I let Gaim set away through the mouse and keyboard events.
My settings are away after 5 minuters, set to default away message. Awaymessage at both unavaliablility and inactivity.
