well, what has happened is that it has incorrectly added

extension=mcrypt.so

to the end of the  /etc/php5/cli/php.ini   file, instead of creating an
entry in /etc/php5/conf.d

php5-mcrypt/hardy doesn't install mcrypt.ini in /etc/php/conf.d
