To be honest, I don't remember whether I installed the Flash plug-in separately. All I remember is that I didn't explicitly ask to install it -- probably it got included when I selected some other ones to install. Nevertheless, I think, that doesn't matter now.
I think I was using ALSA when I first discovered the problem, and then searched around for restarting the sound driver alone. This brought me to PulseAudio and I chose PulseAudio since then (for no obvious reasons though). Now, I changed everything to ALSA, as you suggested. I opened a YouTube site with a flash media streaming. Meanwhile, I tried to playback a video with mplayer. I found that the mplayer video was frozen, until I close the firefox page with the YouTube video! To repeat, I'm using ALSA this time (but neither logged out nor restarted the laptop after I changed the sound settings) . Let me know if I can provide you more details.
