Hello! the behaviour described above has disappeard without me knowingly doing anything. at the time it was reproducible insofar as moving the panel around always had the effect described above. As far as I remember it started when the laptop was connected to a beamer. Unfortunately I don't have a beamer here to test whether connecting it again would again lead to the same error.
This was on Ubuntu 8.04 with an intel 855GM chipset. Attached the output of lspci, in case that is of relevance.
