gnome-session use now gnome-wm has default window manager not directly metacity gnome-wm get the window manager in gconf key /app/gnome-session/gnome-wm/window_manager gnome-appareance capplet use /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default gconf key and it's obsolete
