You might be able to restore the logout menu by changing a gnome-session
setting. Be careful with this application as you can change all kinds of
things...  Press Alt-F2 and type "gconf-editor" into the dialogue box
then click "run".  Open the "apps" branch, then scroll down and open
"gnome-session", then click on "options".   If the box beside the
"logout_prompt" option is blank, click it so that it contains a tick.
Now close the Configuration Editor and your logout menu should be
restored.
