In general offlineimap uses exceptions to report almost all errors. It
could be argued to change this; it should then be reported as a wishlist
bug against upstream: http://packages.debian.org/sid/offlineimap

Regarding apport, it is only turned on during development, so the
behavior experienced is correct. They can be annoying, but that is
exactly why they are turned off.
