i'd like to have this thing addressed, too. this "bug" can be very frustrating for users switching from windows and it's by far more convenient for beginner/intermediate/power-users to have this functionality, too. i can think of no use case where the current behavior brings an advantage. i see that X is not something very dynamic and the X clipboard will probably not be changed soon. but (as suggested) glipper provides the needed functionality (and a whole lot more). i'd suggest to get glipper maintained, included in main and shipped installed with the default setup.
