fwiw, in Hardy it doesn't work as a camera, although Windows' generic
camera wizard seems to recognise it. That's a separate bug though.

As for this bug - I don't think the iphone should show up as a music player, 
should it? It doesn't mount via mass storage, or support MTP, so Rhythmbox 
couldn't do anything with it anyway.
Or am I missing something?

I'd say that, unfortunately, this is currently unfixable. At best you
could trigger something to networkmount a jailbroken iphone, but unless
someone cracks the protocols for talking to it (tcp multiplexed over
USB), it's not going to work anytime soon.
