I changed xres=1600 and yres=1200 in /etc/usplash.conf to 800 and 600 respectively, then did sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash (not sure if this actually required), and it fixed the problem.
The vga=0x315 was something I did long before dist-upgrading to Edgy. It's necessary to get ttys looking reasonable, because LCD displays don't interpolate. That error message from update-grub is confusing BTW.
