Just an update: I have just done a fresh installation of Kubuntu 8.04, no available network connection during installation. I enabled universe per the Adept "software sources" method, but changes packages weren't reloaded. Thus the built-in adept batch for "Desktop Effects" kept giving "compiz-kde not found". A manually apt-get update sorted this for me.
However: would it not be possible (and perhaps wiser?) to do an apt update as part of the adept batch install?
