Thanks for your response. The clock applet once and awhile froze my desktop (that is: the panel), but I discovered a work around (killing the gnome panel in a terminal). I think it has something to do with the contents of the clock applet dropdown (locations or tasks or something. Maybe a connection to some server is too slow and the applet is freezing the panel?). I saw on the internet that I am not the only one with this kind of experience.
The last couple of weeks I experienced no problems however.
