The following workaround addresses the (did I mention *incredibly
annoying*) wait at startup, at the price of sound.  Silence, if not
golden, is at least relatively quick.

      sudo chmod 776 /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
      sudo cat /lib/linux-sound-base/noALSA.modprobe.conf >> 
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
      sudo chmod 664 /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
