(I have a medion 96640 laptop too) I think that it's just a bug with ALSA. To resolve this bug, we have to compile alsa (sources). I had to install also a sort of 'patch'... I explain in this web-page http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-audio-op-medion-MD-96640-p18665381.html . 'alsamixer' is unavailable in Hardy because there is PulseAudio instead of Alsa...
