i rather tend to agree that gdm should check for zero length strings for the username and simply ignore the enter key in such cases in the upstream code ... its a minor cosmetical issue though as it behaves right and tells the user that the data input was invalid. i filed a gnome usability bug (545322) for that upstream so it can be fixed in future versions
