Public bug reported:

My problems are inherent to the fact I also want to run windows on a raid 0
config. I have a three computers in a lan. My main computer has an MSI K9A2
Platinum mb provided with sb600 south bridge serving 4 sata connectors capable
of running ide, ahci or raid and an extra promise t3 chip serving 2 sata
connectors and 2 e-sata connectors capable of running ide or raid. It has one
ide connector. The computer contains 4 sata disks, 2 equal disks in raid 0 and
consequently 2 inequal disks in jbod. (this is the only option on this mb in
raid config)
My second computer is dedicated to experimenting with multi booting with
windows and various linux distro's just for fun. It is provided with an Asrock
AliveNF5-eSATA2+ mb with NVIDIA nForce 520 chipset serving 4 sata connectors
and 2 e-sata connectors. It has one ide connector. The computer contains 2
equal sata disks in raid 0 and 1 ide disk
The third computer belongs to my wife. It is provided with an 929SLI32-eSATA2
mb with uli M1697 south bridge serving 4 sata connectors and 2 e-sata
connectors. It has two ide connectors. The computer contains 2 ide disks.

I can only run the live cd and install (k)ubuntu 8.04 distro's on the third
computer. But not trouble free. It is impossible to get network connection. The
network is set to roaming. When I change it with the network tool into dhcp or
into static addresses no cure.
When I change it manually (sudo gedit /etc/network/ interfaces) using tips from
the ubuntu forums nu cure either.

On the second pc I managed to install suse 10.3 on the ide disk. At the time it
had 2 sata raid 0 and two jbod I had kubuntu gutsy gibbon installed on jbod.
That was the only version ever having the right chipset drivers for nForce 520!
In the present situation running the live cd or installing (k)ubuntu hardy
heron is not possible as the startup always ends up in the busy box in spite
of the presence of an ide disk.

On the first computer having only raid 0 and jbod disks hardy heron als
o ends up in the busy box. But here no other distro (fedora9 and suse
10.3) can be installed either.

These are my problems in a large nutshell.
I assume the problems are all due to missing or faulty hardware drivers. I was
most upset by the fact that hardy heron came with much less driver support then
gutsy gibbon. If you want to beat microsoft ( and that is what we all want
isn't it?) then linux shall have to improve on chipset support especially
software raid.

With due respect

Johan Eek
