Hi, I am also experiencing this bug. Some further experimentation reveals that the places menu still shows the disk after unmounting (but not unplugging) - when unplugged the disk is removed from the places menu.
So probably this is only a nautilus issue. Also very occasionally the correct behaviour is observed (disk removed from tree after being unmounted). I didn't experience this problem with Gutsy - if that helps.
