Hi, after proceeding as you suggested, I find the same happening again -- localedef running at ~ 99% of CPU time with 52 MB of resident memory for approx. 100 minutes now. While no other user programs are running besides X, I see very brief hard disk activity in regular intervals of about 2 seconds, i.e., different from typical logging and syncing activity if I am not mistaken.
I will shut down the computer by pressing the power button and remove the package after reboot. I will be out of town from Sunday until mid-august and do not have access to my computer during this period, so I will unfortunately not be able to assist in the search for the culprit before I return.
