Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

When trying to boot with kernel 2.6.24-20-generic (version 2.6.24-20.37), the
system won't boot. It stops displaying the message "Starting up" on screen.
When booting in recovery mode, the boot process halts after displaying the line
about testing the processor for the HLT instruction.
Booting with kernel 2.6.24-19 is no problem at all. Works like a charm...

My system:
Motherboard: Asus A7V600-X (latest bios)
Processor: AMD Sempron 2500+
Memory: 1024 MB 400MHz DDR
Video: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600] rev 0, Mem @ 0xe0000000/28,
0xbf800000/16, I/O @ 0xd800/8, BIOS @ 0xdffe0000/17
Further hardware specs are tot be found in the attached kernel logging from
booting kernel 2.6.24-19 after failing to boot 2.6.24-20
