Thanks; this worked for me in edgy rc when I had the same problem but I hadn't tried this machine with dapper so not exactly like your situation.
However the problem on my machine was that apm didn't power off the machine correctly where as previously (with several other older distributions) it had powered off without the need to force the acpi because the bios date according to dmesg is 1999, so I don't think I have ever used acpi on this machine.
