I noticed this too.  I did some searching and found a post at
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-435838.html that was
helpful.

I found that fbcon was already loaded by using the command
lsmod | sort

so I loaded vga16fb to fix the problem.  The fonts now look different
now, but it is very clear and easy to see all the colours now.
