I upgraded the ASUS A8N-VM CSM BIOS to this level (the most recently available on the ASUS web site as of a week or two ago): A8N-VM-ASUS-CSM-1007.ROM
I also REMOVED the "all-generic-ide" line from /boot/grub/menu.lst. Since that time, I have not observed ANY of the hangs I reported earlier.
