i can confirm that a fresh install of Intrepid alpha 2 with all the updates as of 2008-07-18 still have the same problem. this is the full version of kernel: 2.6.26-4-generic #1 SMP Mon Jul 14 18:39:36 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It seems that the firmware is simply missing from installation.
