I found the fix.  Apparently, there are two mechanisms activated by
default in xubuntu to automount volumes.  The gnome mount program (the
name escapes me) and Thunar's built in Volman plugin.  I solved this
issue by disabling Thunar's volume management in the program's settings.
This is a very easily fixable, but very irritiating bug.  I do hope that
someone can alert the Xubuntu team to it so it can be fixed.  The issue
is present on the liveCD as well as the default installation.  an
alternate solution, but one I haven't tested, would be to remove or
disable the gnome program.
