Still no success. I noticed there were duplicate sections in my
xorg.conf file so I cleaned it up some and restarted my xserver. Still
nothing. I get 640x480 when trying to switch users.

Any other ideas? Should I assume this bug is really not all that
pervasive and only limited to a very small subset of users or do very
few Ubuntu users have multi-user setups? There seems to be so little
activity on this issue.
