It was a while ago but in the libsdl1.2-mixer documentation it says "do not do <something>", I think if you are using it asynchronously, prboom does. When I stopped it doing that (patch not available but I recall it wasn't too complex), the crash wasn't prevented, but it did happen later on (and the backtrace became more useful).
