Restricted driver management can not install alsa-firmware, because the package is not included in the "restricted" repository, like nvidia restricted driver.
For the what you said before, we do our best for supporting sound cards. If we can't do better, it is most of the time a problem of the vendor, not from Ubuntu. And as I said, Medibuntu repository is like Wine HQ or other third party project, with their own repository. I guess that in time, it will be included in Ubuntu, like a lot of project started as third party : Kubuntu is a good exemple of that point. To discuss (troll ??) again about that subject, you have #ubuntu-devel on irc, and other channels, plus devel mailing lists, etc...
