There are two other bugs which all seem to be about the same issue: bug #28661 bug #159317
This issue is currently happening to me, but I don't know which should be "the" bug, and which should be duplicates. Obviously bug #28661 is oldest, but this bug has the most recent activity. If it's okay with others, in a week or so (when I get back from vacation), I'll mark the others as duplicates of this one and add some of my own debugging info here. By the way, this issues happens to me on arbitrary emails. If I kill evolution and restart, it is able to format and display whichever email it previously choked on. And it is always able to display emails when I open them in a separate window, it issue is only with the preview pane. I installed the -dbg version of all evolution components and it actually appears to happen less frequently (though this could simply be in my head).
