Maybe you could try a newer driver. NVIDIA has fixed performance problems with geforce 8xxx and Compiz.
Both of you, please follow these steps: 1) enable the hardy-updates and the hardy-proposed, universe and multiverse repositories and refresh your list of packages. 2) install envyng-gtk 3) launch envyng from the Applications/System tools/EnvyNG menu and select the automatic installation.
