2. Actually I never did it that way but by using 'dpkg --install'
3. Yes. Depending on which kernel you want download one of the linux-image 
packages at
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/ and call the dpkg command 
with that.

was that with any of the debug kernels or just with the original one? If
that was the stock ubuntu kernel, maybe you could try the 35smb1 kernel
as well? If the problem persists there we have to look closer and decide
whether this is something new or might relate to the current problem.
